DUKE CENTRAL CHILLED WATER PLANT NO. 2 EXPANSION

Location: Duke University,
Durham, NC
Size: 22,500 sf
Year Completed: 2011

This project doubled the size of the original chiller plant constructed in 2005.  The steel framed building consists of a basement pump gallery, ground floor chiller plant and mezzanine level offices.  The barrel shaped roof is framed with steel trusses the span the width of the chiller plant floor to create a column free space.  An overhead bridge crane was installed below the trusses to service the chillers.

The project also included a cast-in-place concrete cooling tower basin with storage sump, site retaining walls, and a chemical storage shelter.  This project received LEED Gold Certification.
